Our First Month In Salmon

It has been great to be back here working in Salmon. The focus this month has been getting plugged in and figuring out what is most needed and where I need to start with the work here. I have been assigned to preach three Sundays a month and teach the Wednesday night class. I am picking up where they left off in their study of the book of Ephesians, and I am using topics from the book for the Sunday sermons. The men normally rotate preaching, so they decided to keep themselves in the rotation to not fall out of practice. This was the first congregation we worked with back in 2024. Since that time, there have been several baptisms. Some of the men and I are studying with a couple that was baptized a few months ago. I have also set up a study with a convert who moved away and has since moved back. Please pray that these studies go well and help these babes in Christ mature.

There was great rejoicing Saturday night, the 28th of June, when Jeff Minor baptized Staushia into Christ. Jeff and Jill Minor have been working with children in the Salmon area for many years. One of those children was Amanda, Staushia’s mother. That relationship began when Amanda was 5 years old; now her daughter continues that legacy in Christ under the influence of the Minors. This is a great example of when loving and caring adults make the time to sow the seed in the hearts of children. When you begin early helping people come to Christ, you have the opportunity to bless generations with the gospel. Staushia lives in Southern Idaho but came to Salmon for Jeff to baptize her. Please pray for her continued journey in Christ.

The church in Salmon has an annual congregational camping trip. This year it was at Williams Lake, just up and over the mountain from the town. We didn’t bring our RV into this camp, but we came up every day and stayed for the evening devotional. It was a good time of fellowship and enjoying God’s creation. Cara and I got to hike and explore the area.

At the end of June, a “Winter” storm hit the area. Snow covered the mountains above 6500 feet; Salmon sits at just over 3000 above Sea level. It rained for almost three days straight in the valley, and daytime highs didn’t get out of the 40’s. This is very good because they did not get a lot of snow this season, which causes drought conditions and forest fire hazards. I know this may not be what those of you want to hear about if you are in triple-digit temps, but it has been a blessing here.

I got to attend the ribbon-cutting for the newest state park in Idaho. Twin Peaks Ranch just outside of Salmon became the newest Idaho State Park in 30 years. It was once a 650-acre ranch and hunting lodge. It was neat to be a witness to Idaho State history.
